IRMM employs about 290 staff of which about 190 are Commission officials and the others are visiting scientists, PhD or post-doctoral fellows, or hold a temporary contract. Geel site furthermore accomodates some 45 other JRC staff, mostly officials and a few contract agents, from Resources Directorate or Scientific Policy and Stakeholders relations Directorate of the Joint Research Centre. About 40% of personnel on site is women.
The institute is funded by the JRC budget from the Commission’s Framework Programmes. About 10% of the institute budget is competitive income from the sales of reference materials, from participating in projects of the European Commission Framework Programmes or work performed for customers mainly from other Directorates-General.
