Shortly after taking up office, the new Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, Máire Geoghegan-Quinn, visited the JRC-IRMM and conveyed her best wishes for the 50th anniversary of the institute.

Commemorative banner on the facade of the EC's Berlaymont building, 29 October - 7 November 2010
A banner marking IRMM's 50th anniversary was placed on the facade of the Commission's Berlaymont building in Brussels. The banner aimed at raising awareness of the institute and our activities amongst our Brussels-based stakeholders. The tagline of the banner was "Providing measurement solutions - for tomorrow's challenges (life sciences, nanotechnology, nuclear safety)".
International scientific conference and inauguration of new reference materials production building, 23-25 November 2010
The JRC-IRMM hosted a high-level conference entitled "The Future of Reference Materials – Science and Innovation", under the auspices of the Belgian Presidency of the EU. The conference aimed at mapping out the current and upcoming measurement and testing needs for which challenging demands on reference materials are envisaged.
The conference opened with the inauguration ceremony of a new building for reference materials production at JRC-IRMM.

Research in nuclear sciences: impact on the citizen, 9 December 2010
The Belgian Nuclear Society, in association with SCK•CEN, the Institute for Radioelements (IRE), and the JRC, organised a conference on nuclear sciences in physics and medical applications. The conference took place at the JRC-IRMM in Geel, Belgium. The main purpose of the conference was to promote nuclear science and innovation and to demonstrate its impact on new technologies and health in Belgium and at international level. Guest speakers included the Belgian Federal Minister for "SMEs, the self-employed, agriculture and science policy", Sabine Laruelle, and Philippe Busquin - former European Commissioner, former Member of the European Parliament, and currently Chairman of the Board of IRE.
