Our history: 1960 - 2010

The year 2010 marked the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the Joint Research Centre's Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements (IRMM) – formerly known as the Central Bureau for Nuclear Measurements – in Geel, Belgium.

The institute's scientific portfolio has evolved over the years to adapt to emerging societal challenges, against a backdrop of unprecedented scientific progress in the second half of the 20th century. At the same time, the institute has remained true to its founding principle of scientific meticulousness in the provision of accurate reference data and measurements.
